As part of its ongoing off-site programme, John Hansard Gallery worked with the Istanbul Biennial and artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, curators of this year’s biennial. Institutions worldwide have been invited to host artist billboards in public spaces, and we are proud to include the University of Southampton’s Hartley Library and Level 4 Gallery amongst these destinations.
The theme of this year’s Istanbul Biennial is a good neighbour, exploring notions of home, neighbourhoods and how private spheres have changed in recent years. The graphic billboards on Level 4 were a joint collaboration between photographer Lukas Wassmann and graphic designer Rupert Smyth. The image and text works opened up conversations about what it means to be a good neighbour.
The exhibition ran from 20 November 2017 – 4 February 2018
